Santorini's Two Ports: Ferry Terminal and Cruise Dock

Apart from the airport arrivals and departures, Santorini receives arrivals at two completely separate locations, and they operate nothing alike. Athinios Port is the island’s ferry terminal, connected by road and reachable by vehicle. The Old Port (Skala) is the tender dock for cruise ships, sitting at the base of the caldera cliffs with no road access at all. Your transfer arrangement depends entirely on which port applies to your arrival. Knowing the difference before you land means no confusion at the dock, no wasted time, and a driver waiting exactly where you need them.

How to Get from Santorini Port to Oia

There are three ways to make this journey. Each suits a different type of traveller.

Private Transfer

Private port transfers are the only guaranteed door-to-door option. Your vehicle is confirmed at booking, your driver monitors your ferry arrival, there is no queue. From €50. Fixed price, confirmed at booking.

Taxi

Taxis wait at Athinios after ferry arrivals, but Santorini has only around 35 to 40 licensed taxis serving the entire island. When multiple ferries arrive within the same hour, the queue forms immediately and can stretch to 30 to 60 minutes during July and August.

Public Bus (KTEL)

There is no direct bus from Athinios Port to Oia. The KTEL bus from the port goes to Fira only. From Fira, a second bus to Oia departs every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 23:00. With luggage during peak season, securing a seat on buses is unreliable. Total journey time is 1 hour to 1 hour 40 minutes.

Getting to Oia from the Old Port (Cruise Passengers)

If you are arriving by cruise ship, your tender boat docks at the Old Port (Skala) at the base of the caldera cliffs below Fira, not at Athinios. There is no road access at the Old Port.

Your driver meets you at the top of the cable car in Fira. From there, the drive to Oia is approximately 11 km, taking 20 to 25 minutes.

During peak season, cable car queues on cruise days can stretch to 45 minutes or more. Pre-arranging your transfer means your driver is already waiting the moment you reach the top.

We can also arrange a water taxi from the Old Port to Athinios if you prefer to avoid the cable car entirely. Contact us when booking to discuss this option.

About Oia

Oia sits at the northwestern tip of Santorini, perched on the caldera rim at an altitude of approximately 100 metres. It is home to the island’s most photographed sunset viewpoint & the iconic blue-domed churches.

Many properties in Oia are located in pedestrian-only lanes accessible only on foot. Your driver will drop you at the nearest point reachable by vehicle, which is typically a short walk from your accommodation.

Getting around Oia: Once inside the village, everything is walkable. The main lane runs the length of the village and connects the main square, the castle ruins, and the sunset viewpoint.

Avoid sunset hours on the road: Traffic approaching Oia between 17:00 and 20:00 during summer can significantly increase journey times from the port.
